Concrete 101: Stamped Concrete — How It’s Done and How to Maintain It
RLW: The Mixer Minute
Stamped concrete is where strength meets style—offering the look of stone, brick, or wood with the durability of poured concrete. But how does it work, and what does it take to keep it looking great?
How It’s Done
Stamped concrete is installed like any other slab—but with added artistry and timing:
-
Pouring the Concrete: A consistent, workable mix is placed and leveled.
-
Coloring: Integral color is added to the mix, or a color hardener is applied to the surface.
-
Stamping: While the surface is still soft, textured mats are pressed into the concrete to imprint patterns.
-
Detailing: Release agents, joint work, and hand tooling add depth and realism.
-
Sealing: A protective sealer enhances color, adds gloss, and protects against weather, wear, and stains.
Maintaining Stamped Concrete
Like any surface, stamped concrete needs care to stay looking its best:
-
Clean Regularly: Sweep debris and rinse with a hose or mild detergent.
-
Reseal Every 2–3 Years: A fresh coat of sealer keeps color vibrant and protects against fading and water damage.
-
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Deicers and harsh cleaners can dull the surface or break down the sealer.
-
Repair Cracks Early: Small cracks can be filled to prevent spreading and preserve appearance.
Stamped concrete is a low-maintenance alternative to pavers or stone, offering curb appeal and long-term value with the right care.
